Thank you for all the suggestions.
It is not converted for unleaded, but I do use an additive.
There is no pinking and it is not running hot.
The plugs are only 14 months old and have only done 3000 km.
I will try new plugs and check the timing and see if this fixes the problem.
It has mainly only done short running lately, so maybe an "Italian Tuneup"
may help.

If this is OK suggest you check condition of plugs, if these badly worn
could create a hot spot. Is the engine converted to unleaded or are you
using an additive? Worn valves/seats can also create a hot spots, do you
use the car regularly and use some revs.,a good high speed, revs not mph
may help.
Other things to check are the cooling system,is it running hot?, valve
clearance and any leaks in the inlet?,gaskets gone, worn throttle spindles
for instance.
