The colour was washed out by the flashlight.
The ambient light meant using a slow shutter speed without the flash and my shaking hands put the pictures out of focus.
Here is an out of focus picture which shows a more true colour of black.
I do not think it is running lean.
A couple of months ago I replaced the auto choke pull off diaphragm and freed up the fast idle cam on the twin choke webber but this should not affect the mixture.

If that's so a weak mixture causes excess heat and any carbon deposits can glow and cause the running on you mention. Might be worth an 'Italian' tune up, good thrash above 4,000RPM. Be careful about running weak as it can damage the exhaust valves and seats also.

Popping it on a gas analyser would be good to see what the CO is?
