The exhaust pipe outlet is sooty black.
When I wipe inside the outlet with a rag or my finger, it comes away coated
black (But not greasy or oily)
Here in the antipodes (Western Australia) we only have one oil refinery
(BP) which supplies the majority of the fuel in the state apart from a few
small importers.
The majority of the retail outlets are in the hands of supermarket chains.
Coles have most of the Shell outlets and Woolworths have most of the Caltex
outlets.
Apart from them we have Ampol , BP and a few independents so there is not
a lot of choice to find quality fuel.
The standard Unleaded is 91 RON (Research Octane Number)
The premium Unleaded is 98 RON which I generally fill up with.
There is also Unleaded 95 RON available at some outlets but they generally
only have one bowser hidden away so as to encourage us to buy the premium
unleaded at premium price !
I do not think there is any bio fuel available in Western Australia at this
time although it is marketed in some of the Eastern States.
Such is life in the developing resource boom state.
I will check the mounting bolts of the Webber carburetor in case I did not
tighten them sufficiently when I had the carby off a couple of months ago,
as if loose, this could account for a lean mixture.

The crossflow runs best when the mixture is on the rich side rather than weak.
I trust you use 97 octane fuel, personally I prefer BP or Texaco, sadly no
Shell in the area.
I suggest you keep away from Tesco 99 octane, great in my Skodas which
need a minimum of 98 octane but, as it contains more bio fuel than the
normal 5% attacks older vehicle fuel systems.
