The use of green for British racing cars dates from the first Gordon Bennet
races, which were hosted alternately by the countries involved. When it
came to Britain's turn in 1903, they couldn't have the races on the
mainland as street racing was illegal, so they held them in Ireland. Green
was selected as a sign of appreciation to the Irish.
