In truth, delays due to cable theft are not as common as you may think. I
commute every weekday and in an area notorious for cable theft. I don’t
think we’ve had more than a couple of delays since January.

We also have some zones out towards the Humber still on semaphores, and that
makes for an interesting journey on the odd occasion I go that way.

I had to go to London last week for a meeting. These days, meetings are
condensed to allow travel there & back in the day outside peak times. So I
went from Doncaster on the 08.31 – non-stop to KX – arrived 10.13 bang on
time. Single standard was £12.00. A car can’t compete with that.

Return was 15.48 with stops at Grantham and Retford. Arrived Doncaster at
17.29 – five minutes late. Single standard was £17.00.

I call that excellent value, and service.

In truth, the business paid standard fare and I upgraded at my own expense,
First was £39 each way.

The return service was only 10% full.

Dave (a big rail fan).

I believe there is also value in the casings of fibre cables someone told me
recently when working in Cape Town - they get round it by using satellite -
butt then you can always nick the satellite base station

Back to semaphores with steel wire, or fibre optics.

If we could have railway system as good as that in most of Europe, it would
be splendid indeed. Unfortunately for me to use the railway for my work
would be either impossible (e.g. I can't get to Exeter before 09:00 in the
morning) or ruinously expensive (std return to Paddington is £146.00).

Another problem with the railways is that they suffer from constant delays
caused by 'signalling problems' - i.e. cable theft.
