I was not aware of gittip.com myself. At my company we donate every 3 
months some cash to open source, each of us have a chance to suggest and 
vote for candidates and the one with the most votes gets the prize.

It's very rare that an individual would come up on the list, it's usually 
organisations. I can't think of any other reason then that it's hard to 
find a page where it would list why and how to donate. I.e. I recently 
added chromatic to the list, though it was easy to find his details.
