I was able to sort this out now. I had each host sending through a smart-host for e-mail and thought it was translating the hostname to an actual resolvable domain name on the internet. However, that was not the case. I have changed the from address on all hosts to hostname@resolvablefqdn and now e-mail is working as expected.
