Steve,
I'm sending this to the list to let everyone know what I've found out about
this. What I was talking about was not a single "hidden" comment -- I was
talking about this new option on eBay where a person can opt to have ALL of his
feedback comments hidden. When you see his bid, you see his ID name like usual,
but in the parens next to it where you would normally see a feedback
number, instead you see (private). When you click on (private) you are taken to
a normal feedback page, but all you can see are the raw score numbers, not any
of the comments.
I have discovered that this option is now being used by those who purchase
a lot of XXX material on eBay. And, yeah, I guess I can see where it would be a
bit embarrassing to have it visible for everyone to see what you have been
buying. I was told that there was a recent divorce case where the wife had her
lawyer document all the kinky purchases her husband had been making on eBay, by
following back the feedback comments, and then used that information against him
in court, accusing him of being a "sex addict". Apparently the guy was ordered
to go through involuntary therapy as a result.
The person who bid on my own auction turns out of have been a solid
buyer on eBay for 5 years and has 100% perfect positives, so I decided "what the
heck" and told him I would accept his bid after all -- but now he's so pissed at
me for canceling his first bid that he probably won't take me up on it.
What a world...
