Why don't people learn? You don't want to buy daybills. I know what I'm
talking about because I've been buying them for years, picking up great
film titles with superb artwork -- sometimes better than the US version -- for
great bargain prices because so many other collectors very properly turn up
their noses at them (along with French posters). These people know that the US
one-sheet is the pinnacle of collecting and that there is no point in wasting
their time on anything else. But still, every once in a while someone will
come along and wonder if they should buy some of these "daybill things".
Don't be fooled. Sure, these daybills are almost as large as a US insert
and are super-easy to frame and display. Sure they have great graphics. Sure,
they are in English. Sure they have great prices. But they are from Down
Under, people! So don't be crazy -- go back to only buying US versions of
posters before it's too late!!!

The rarity or not of daybills is not much
different to US posters. Whilst
there are some titles that are easily
found and regularly appear on eBay,
others are extremely scarce. The same
applies to US posters. There are many
dealers in the US and elsewhere,
including myself, with large quantities of
certain good titles in either
US one sheets, lobby cards, inserts etc. I
have spent a lot of time in
the US over the years and have purchased a load
of material from various
dealers and collectors and it is often amazing to
see the quantities of
posters on one title that some people have.
Just as an example, I
have come across one dealer who seemed to have an
unlimited quantity of
The Mole People inserts, another had a load of Attack
of the 50 Foot
Woman pressbooks and over 200 Halloween II one sheets. I have
boxes of US
one sheets and lobby cards on certain average to poor titles
that I would
love to get rid of but will probably take a lifetime to sell.
Even
the more up market material like Vertigo US one sheets appear
almost
weekly for sale. A Vertigo US one sheet is a very desirable poster
and
always seems to get a good price but I can only guess at how many
have been
sold over the years. There seems to have been one at every
major auction in
living memory and most of the major dealers have had
them at one time or
another - same goes for Breakfast at Tiffany's one
sheets. Try finding an
Australian one sheet on Vertigo. I can think
of many, many, more US posters
that are kept in quantity by various
dealers.
Many dealers are naturally guarded about what they have in
quantity and
slowly feed them into the market, while others sell off
portions of their
stack to other dealers. Add that to the fact that US
posters were printed in
huge quantities and many were kept in storage
long after their release. US
posters were also sent to places like New
Zealand and Canada in bulk for the
release of films there and many have
survived in large numbers albeit with
censor stickers or stamps
added.
There are only about 4 or 5 real dealers in Australia and a
few more part
timers. Most of the serious dealers end up with the bulk of
decent
Australian titles and that is why you probably see certain titles
appearing
regularly with some of us. There are many more dealers in the
US - much more
of a spread of material but still many many good titles
appear with great
frequency.
Titles like Dial M for Murder are
near impossible to find in daybill format.
I have collected Hitchcock for
years and have never seen a daybill on that
title. There are many similar
examples. Conversely, daybills on To Kill a
Mockingbird or the reissue of
the Day the Earth Stood Still turn up quite
regularly on eBay.
You
only have to look at eBay to see that there is just too much material
for
the available market out there and the vast majority of it is from
the
USA.
