I may be new here, but I know enough about
business to say that JR and Susan are exactly right. Everyone understands
that life situations happen, but communication and responsibility are the keys
to solving all of this.
Regardless of the real story behind Eugene's
recent problems, he alone is responsible for all of the bad publicity and
speculation that has taken place here. Not to single him out, but he is
the latest of what seems to be a rash of, well, flakiness in this
hobby.
When all is said and done, the stars like
Bruce, Sue, Diane at Studio C, and others like them will rise to the top and
will get more business out of it. The market (meaning us!) will
reward those that can take care of their customers and communicate. Those
that aren't up to the task will lose market share and fade away. Pretty
simple!

After all is said and done, I have to agree with JR.
Last November, I very suddenly had to go into the hospital. I ship about a
thousand frames a month and while people can be understanding of a sudden
situation, their understanding doesn't last long. In all fairness
though, as a dealer or seller, you have made a commitment to get their
product to them. As a business owner, you have to prepare for situations out
of the normal and have backup for it. I mean, none of my employees deal one on
one with the customers, that's me, but I could certainly have one of them send
out emails to people to tell them of a situation that might slow their order a
bit, but to reassure them that we will get it done asap. In my situation,
mainly because I'm so hardheaded, I did not heed doctor's advice and checked
myself out of the hospital and came straight to work. I figured how hard could
it be just sitting in a chair and doing computer work. Well, it's harder than
you would think. But, I'm a neurotic and I didn't want any customers to think
I was slacking off. Now, I'm not suggesting this behavior for everyone, but I
do agree there is no excuse for not, at the very least, sending an email or
giving a quick call to let someone know what's up. I keep hearing more
and more of these stories coming out of our hobby and I wonder what's wrong
with people. I mean what are they thinking? I have waited weeks,
sometimes, to get a poster shipped to me that I have purchased. I've heard all
the excuses, "my mother died, my dog died, I misplaced it for 3 weeks but just
found it, I shipped it but I can't provide a tracking number", you name it,
I've heard it. Yet Bruce Hershenson, who ships hundreds of packages a week,
seems to get them right out to the customer, packaged well, arriving in great
condition. No excuses. So, obviously, it can be done the correct way. I hope
this situation gets resolved quickly. Best to all.

Why do we have to go through this every time? If it's not Eugene then
it's someone else. Then we get the reports from other people that they are
also having (or had problems in the past) with the person. Then we get
the wild speculation about what *might* be happening. Then we get the
messages that say "I've dealt with this person before and they did alright
by me". So there's a Big Mystery and people who have sent money or posters
have to go through all the worry.
All this could be AVOIDED if the person in question would just have the
simple courtesy to TELL his customers what is going on. One
rumor says Eugene had deaths in the family. That's sad, of course,
and everyone acknowledges that something like this could cause any
person to get behind. Same thing if he had to move suddenly. But -- and
this is important -- how much time and effort would it take for him to send
a quick email to the people he owes something to and say "Hey, sorry, but
I've had some problems and am behind right now but I'll make sure you are
taken care of as soon as I can".
Or, if there simply wasn't time enough for that... hard to imagine...
but if so, then how about just one single public email to this
list letting everyone know there would be some delays, but not to
worry?
I mean, seriously folks, how hard could that be? How much time would it
take, no matter what problems you are having in your personal life?
I'm not just talking about Eugene -- I'm talking about all the other
people who pull a similar stunt. We hear about them almost every
week on this list.
To fail to send just a quick message of explanation which would
prevent people who have trusted you from worrying... well, it really is
not acceptable, no matter what is going on in your life. It is a simple,
common courtesy everyone owes to any person who has entrusted them with
their money, their posters or whatever.
There really is no excuse for not doing this. I'm sorry. There's not.
