Subject: [MOPO] Huh? MIDNIGHT COWBOY
original polish for how much?
Pardon my impudence, but just what is it that makes this polish poster
worth $1200? In checking Bruce's price database (where the prices realized are
always top-dollar and better than you'll find anywhere else), I see that the
US version regularly goes for between $200 to $400. Bruce did sell the Polish
version of the one sheet two years ago for $685.75 cents.
My ignorance about Polish posters leaves me unaware of the special
circumstances surrounding this one. I am guessing the art is really superb and
that it is much harder to find than most other editions of this poster. But
what has changed in the past 2 years to justify a doubling in price? Was there
a big auction where this poster hit the $1200 price mark as a result
of competitive bidding or what?
I'm asking this as a curious, disinterested party who has no desire to
buy a MIDNIGHT COWBOY one sheet from any country at any price. But I am a bit
perplexed and it ties in with something else that's been simmering on the back
boiler in what I laughingly call my mind:
Lately I have noticed this sort of asking price increase happen
with a lot of posters from other countries -- and the high prices being
asked are not necessarily being asked by overseas dealers either -- they
are being asked by dealers here in the US who have these non-English language
posters in their inventory.
So in general -- and to no one person specifically -- I'd like to
ask: What's the deal here? I know the value of the Euro has increased over the
US dollar recently -- but it sure hasn't doubled or tripled and you bought
most of your inventory before that happened, didn't you? And that special
circumstance only applies to dealers outside of the US anyway. I know there
are people -- myself included -- who have started buying non-U.S. posters in
recent years because in many cases the graphics are better and, perhaps even
more important, because in virtually all cases the prices have been
"better".
Of course, anyone can ask whatever price they want for their posters.
It's a free world. But my humble suggestion to those who sell these posters:
Don't get greedy. Don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs -- let the
auction market work and don't try to arbitrarily double or triple the prices
of these posters -- least you nip the recent increased trend towards
buying non-US posters in the bud. Speaking just for myself, if this keeps up I
personally will probably go back to focusing pretty much on US posters.
