Asked and answered. Thank you. By the way, I didn't think anyone
necessarily "jumped on me" but several people did immediately step up to answer
my questions -- which is exactly what I wanted. See? It is possible to ask a
challenging question on MoPo bid and not be chewed to pieces (if you're careful
how you phrase it, that is... :)
But seriously, I do thank everyone for adding a bit more information
to my, um, "vast store" of movie poster knowledge. I had not seen the more
recent auction and private prices in the $1200 price range that have
been achieved recently -- the most recent I saw was Bruce's sale in
his database that happened 2 years ago at the $685.75 figure I mentioned. Boy,
somebody apparently made out like a bandit on that one -- where was everyone
else while he was stealing that poster? How come you dealers let that one slip
by?
So, now that I've got everyone wondering... can anyone direct me to a URL
with an image of this Polish poster that some people seem to be willing to pony
up $1200 bucks for? Now I'm really curious.
By the way, this does NOT change my general concern about the very
significant spike I've noticed in asking prices for non-U.S. posters
lately. That still bothers us, it does...

MIDNIGHT COWBOY Polish is a poster that has had a distinguished
history.
Helmut's price is not as high as several other venues.
Posteritati had
this poster and offered and sold it for $1200 in
1998. Christie's
London
auctioned the poster for $1220 in
September 2000. Dwight Cleveland had
one in 1997 and offered it for
$950. Judy Sullivan at the European Art
Company in Colorado has
offered the poster for $1500. Currently
Posteritati has one on their
website for $2500.
If someone bought one from Bruce or anyone else for
$658.75, that's
great for them. They were there, they were paying
attention and they
raised their
paddle. But that doesn't mean that
that poster is only worth $658.75
give or take 20%. It just doesn't
work like that. And here is another
question: where can I buy
one today for $658.75? That is the other
side of the coin that people
who tout auctions never address. If you
are buying a RETURN OF THE
JEDI one sheet, it's a valid question.
Because you will see one at auction
day after tomorrow. Because they
are not that scarce.
Every
poster is a different case. This poster is not that easy to
find.
