John,

I agree with you about deacidification -- I think anyone with a collection of older posters should have them deacidified to prevent further deterioration of the paper. But you don't have to back a poster to deacidify it.

While backing a poster that doesn't need it may make it "look better" to some people, is that alone a proper reason for altering the "original state" of a collectible? It certainly is not in any other area of collecting. For instance, refinishing an old antique desk may "make it look better" but it certainly will lower its market value. When you back a poster you are seriously changing the original state of the collectible -- something that in most areas of collecting would be considered anathema. In paper collecting, we allow some backing when necessary because the items are made of paper and can get frail over time -- but just because it is something we allow when necessary doesn't mean people should go overboard with the concept.

I think Bruce is right on this one.

Hi everyone

I noticed an interesting comment in one of Bruce Hershenson's descriptions
in his current auction of linen backed posters. He says:

"Note that it is not common for excellent condition posters to be
linenbacked. Most often, collectors only linenback posters to repair
defects."

I would disagree with this. I have had hundreds of posters backed over the
years that were in excellent condition prior to backing simply because they
look more impressive on linen. I think this is certainly true of daybills
but I do know many collectors who routinely have their collections backed
irrespective of whether the poster is in pristine condition or not. They
just like the look of the poster on linen. Of course, a linen backed poster
is also easier to display and frame. I guess another point in favour of
linen backing is that they are generally deacidified during the process and
that should certainly be worthwhile.

I would be interested to hear what you think.

Regards
John
