John,   It's because BidPay officially ceased operations on December 31, 2005. They're gone -- and eBay doesn't want anyone who hasn't got the message thinking they can pay for an auction with BidPay because some sellers have not updated their templates to delete any reference to BidPay. That makes sense. But the prohibition against cash is technically against the law. Cash is legal tender for ALL debts, public and private, issued by the government. It is ALWAYS an acceptable method of payment -- that's mandated by law. Of course, it is extremely risky to send cash through the mail to pay for an auction, and that is why eBay wants to outlaw it as an "acceptable method of payment" on their system. They actually can't do that, either legally or as a practical matter, but they don't want to have some lawyer come along with a suit and claim that they "encouraged" users to pay for auctions with cash.
