At the magic poster auctions, first you have to get clearance to bid...this
is above and beyond registering.
Their cut averages 20%. I think Heritage's 15% is fair... I really do.
Shipping? Well, it seems to me an obvious courtesy to extend to combine
orders on multiple posters to lower the shipping charges. Does Heritage
offer this? I have no idea.

Subject: Re: [MOPO] Heritage tutorial for Auction
Um, Gee... JR... since MoPo is supposed to be informative and helpful to
other members, I thought I might be able to help a few of them out who
want to bid with Heritage and who want to get registered. That was the
entire intent of my post. I was waiting for your response. It seems that
everytime somone says anything positive about Heritage you are the first
one to jump in and have something negative to say. That bitterness about
Heritage is going to eat you up. I was thinking about adding a line to my
post after my first paragraph with something like... (Okay, JR, you can
quit reading now because you'll just be upset that someone is trying to
assist other members who want to participate in the sale).
You apparently have a massive problem with buyers premiums at auction
houses. I have to say that at auction houses (not online sites alone) they
all charge buyers premiums, (And the 15% Heritage charges is rather cheap
compared to other auction houses where it is frequently 17.5% up to 22%).
It is a necessary part of doing business where the auction house is able
to cover the overhead of conducting the live auctions. If you don't like
it, that's okay. You don't have to bid with them. Nothing is being hidden,
nothing is being charged that isn't clearly spelled out in the terms and
conditions of the sale. And (dare I say it???) there's nothing wrong with
that!!! And by the way, JR- it is 15% not the 20% you calculated by the
example you gave in your post. I think most of the people out there can
calculate 15% - well, all but one I know of. At any rate, just adjust you
bid accordingly and take into account the buyer's premium.
Does that make online sites that don't charge a buyers premium any better?
Are you seriously implying that? Are you seriously going to sit there and
accuse the rest of the people in the hobby of being so feeble minded that
they can't take the buyers premium into account? An ebay bid of $230 is
the same thing as a Heritage bid of $200. It's still $230. You really
need to get over it.
As for the rest of your post, thanks for adding to the tutorial about how
online bidding ends and then the floor bidding commences the following day
with the live event. That was, I'm sure, very helpful to the other MoPo
members who haven't participated before.

Um, Gee... Ron... since we're being so helpful to confused and uncertain
member of MOPO who might not understand how to register and bid on
Heritage's
auctions, perhaps someone should also explain to them that Heritage
charges
something called a " 15% buyer's premium" -- which means that if they bid
and
win an item for $200, that it will actually cost them $240 -- plus
Heritage's
traditionally very high shipping costs? I mean, just make sure they're
not
confused?
Oh, yes, perhaps it would also help clarify thing to explain to them that
this
auction is not like other online auctions, because after the online
bidding
"ends" the bidding continues for another day live on the floor at the
Dallas
auction house. As explained in Heritage's own words:
"The floor auction is being held in Dallas, TX on March 17-18, 2006.
Online
bidding ends at 10:00PM CT the night before the floor session for this
lot.
Your secret maximum online bid will compete for you during the floor
auction,
and it is possible that you may be outbid on the floor after internet
bidding
closes."
I think if someone explained all of this to them, it would clear up any
confusion they might have.

he needed to go through to bid with them. He thought it might be a lot
of
trouble, but I assured him that it was actually quite easy. It occured to
me
that there might be some other members who would like to bid as well but
were
unfamiliar or possibly even a little intimidated about the process of
getting
registered.

just
above the image of the King Kong one sheet is a "Join Now" icon. Click on
that
and follow the instructions to get resigistered for the sale.

> Once you've registered you can see all of the items in the auction by
finding the image of the catalog for their upcoming sale (2006 March Rare
Movie Poster Auction #633). Under the dates of the sale (March 17-18) it
says
"browse"- click on that and it will let you see all of the genres/
catagories
in the sale. Click on "All Items" to see everything or go to your
favorite
type of poster.

Grey's a great guy, easy to talk to and I know he'll get you registered

click to sign up for phone bidding! That should be particularly useful
as
I've had many people ask me over the years how they can go about getting
to
bid by phone. Heritage has now made that option super-easy and I have to
say
that it's also a great way to bid. When I can't attend an auction in
person,
this has always been my preferred method of bidding.
