You know there are sellers everywhere that sell "this way" based on the
assumption that the buyer may not be experienced enough to detect restoration or
just won't catch it. I bought a three sheet several years back from a very well
known dealer in an auction format. The poster was listed as very fine condition
on linen. It went for a pretty good amount of money, the highest price it had
ever realized. When I received the poster, the whole top 1/3 rd of the 3
sheet had been recreated, not just restored but recreated. I knew because the
seam between the top 1/3 rd of the poster and the bottom 2/3 rd's bisected
the title of the film and the bottom part of the letters was stone litho and the
top half of the letters were recreated with colored pencil. They even still had
the grooves in the paper from someone who had colored in the lettering.
When I talked to the seller about it, they told me that is why I should only bid
on posters that I inspect myself live at the auction. They never took any
responsibility for purposefully lying in the auction description. Last time I
ever bought from them and I never recommended that auction to any of my
clients.
