I don't think that people should be compelled to write for Mopo, but I feel
very strongly (and have said so in the past) that the forum would be better
off if discussions were limited to subjects directly related to our
collecting interests.

Subject: Re: [MOPO] Is MoPo membership on a decline?
I would be happy to put a flyer in every package as it goes out.. but I
don't really want to pay for it. After all, I already promote the site via
banner ad from MoviePosterBid and I also promote MoPo from
www.movieposters-stills.com FOR FREE in both cases and I'm not looking to
acquire more costs when my costs are so high anyway.
while it may increase MoPo traffic, seeing as I already have most of MoPo
on MPB, I'm not sure it would increase any traffic for MPB...
I do have another solution however......
Scott must enforce the rules on one hand.
the recent flap between Jeannie & Claude, and the subsequent members that
attacked Jeannie without really getting on Claude for starting it and
going against the basic rule as stated in the MoPo charter
<I.E. : "1) Personal attacks of any kind will not be tolerated. This
includes name-calling, innuendo, insults or gossip".
while it does not say off list attacks, the reality is that any contact
that is initiated by a member due to any post to the group, should in my
opinion be covered by this rule>
enforcement of this rule will without a doubt keep flamings off the board,
and these flamings are without a doubt a major contributor to falling
membership, especially in light of recent membership decline which lost 20
members following that flap
I was actually very surprised that many did not see the hypocrisy of
coddling Claude for being "outed" on MoPo, while attacking Jeannie for
outing an unsolicited off-list email of Claude attacking her . Now I have
nothing against Claude myself, and I never had any contact with Jeannie
except by reading her posts until last week and without a doubt, Claude
was wrong in flaming her, which is my opinion as an observer and her
presence on this group does not allow members to attack her off list just
because they want to.
ALSO, I suggest a rule be put in place that forces each member to
contribute an essay (500-1500 words) of some sort on something like a 30
day basis, unless for some reason a member cannot do that for outside
reasons that are explained to the list moderator. Any member who does not
contribute gets a 30 day notice, and then is un-subscribed if that member
does not post in the next 30 days. Essays must be about collecting,
movies, actors, posters etc.. and must be reasonably intelligent. Also,
though other members should be allowed to comment on someone's essay..
name calling, flaming etc - which seems to be the major form of
disagreement on this group - should not be happening when someone wants to
post something useful to the group (or any other time)
I know that rule might not appeal to everyone as many members NEVER POST
ANYTHING AT ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
look, there is a simple reality.. MoPo has become a list of sellers and
lurkers and if members are not willing to PARTICIPATE in an intelligent &
meaningful manner, then the group has only one way to go.
There is no doubt that many people on the net think that just because
someone they don't like is on the net, that they can attack them endlessly
with no repercussions unlike if they were on the street, where they would
get their lights punched out. You should handle yourself in the same
manner regardless of whether your are 2 in a room, or 2 on opposite sides
of the world. It's the old "do unto others as you would have them do unto
you" and some on MoPo refuse to acquiesce to that credo.
I'm sure there are other things that can also help.. but that's my
two-cents

Hi All,
The decline in MoPo membership is troubling and I recently talked to Scott
about this less than a month ago.
Anyone care to guess the number of "For Sale/Auction" ads on MoPo vs.
"Wanted" ads? I do not have hard statistics but my guess is they number
close to 9 or 10 "for sale" ads vs. 1 "wanted" ad. I am guilty as well.
Are we all just listing "For Sale" ads to each other?
HERE IS THE IDEA TO INCREASE MEMBERSHIP:
There is a flyer that Scott created a while ago inviting people to join
MoPo. If every seller rolled up one of these flyers and enclosed it with
every poster they sold, think of how many new people would join MoPo. If
the numbers did increase dramatically, think of how many new possible
buyers would now be looking at your "For Sale/For Auction" ads.
This is such a simple concept and at the same time, it is cost efficient
and would easily be trackable to see if it yields any results. But for it
to work, we would need participation from as many sellers as possible and
continue to do it on a consistent basis.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE:
Scott needs to make the flyer downloadable to everyone. It would then be
our responsibility - and yes - our cost to make copies of the flyer and
then enclose them with all poster sales. As sellers, we would benefit by
increasing the membership of MoPo and then we would have more people that
we can drive to our web sites and auctions. Additionally, the number of
want ads will increase as well. Bruce alone could probably double the MoPo
membership in a couple months if he was to get behind this idea.
A small cost to give back to the forum while at the same time potentially
increasing your own personal business.
Opinions/comments from anybody?
Sincerely,
Dave Smith
