A few added points:
1) The "minty white" inserts ARE fuzzier to the view of the naked eye (and this
becomes obvious under magnification), and anyone who has a printing background
can see it immediately, and others should have a pretty good idea of what is
real and what is minty white just on a quick in-person view. But it REALLY
helps if you have owned lots of genuine ones as to whether it is easy for you
to tell the difference. But it is really not as hard as some make it out! In
just about every case where a person has sent me a "minty white" to sell for
them, when I have called them to tell them the bad news, they say "I kind of
suspected it, but was hoping I was somehow wrong". I ask where they purchased
them and it is almost always the same four dealers (I will not name them, but
they are easy to determine, because they list these on eBay regularly; if they
STOP listing them, that would be great for the hobby)!
2) They DO age somewhat, but apparently the different coated stock (glossy both
sides) ages FAR less quickly than genuine inserts. They almost always still
look "minty white", even after years. I would bet the ones that HAVE aged have
been artificially aged by being moistened or left in the sun. But you can't
hide the blurriness of the printing or the art crop on some, so that is only a
minor worry (it is like putting earrings on a pig; it make look better, but it
is still a pig).
3) This forum is proof of what I say about these. The ONLY people defending
these as possibly real are ones who own (or have sold) them, and they clearly
have a vested interest in them being real. You have heard from Sam Sarowitz,
Joe Burtis, and myself that we are 100% sure they are repros and that we turned
down the chance to buy them for WAY below wholesale. Do any of you think we
turned down this "free money" for any other reason than that we were certain
they were repros and we refused to cheat our customers? Also, we three have
sold hundreds of thousands of posters for tens of millions of dollars, and we
have all done this as a full time living for decades. Is that not as "expert"
an opinion as you could find.
4) There have been postings here about a Jaws insert and a Blade Runner insert.
Just seeing the digital images was enough to make me 99% certain they were both
minty whites. If any of you have any inserts you think could possibly be minty
whites, you would do well to post a clear large image here BEFORE offering it
for sale. You will surely quickly receive expert help in determining if it is
real or fake. I know it stinks to have to lose $100 or more on a poster you
were deceived into buying as an original, but it is far worse to yourself offer
it as an original, and then come off looking as a rank amateur when it is
revealed to be a repro.
5) As to how long standing experts in this hobby could not know much (or
anything) about the minty whites, it is completely logical to me. There is NO
way you would ever come in contact with one of these unless you bought it
directly from those who made these repros, or if you re-purchased it from
someone who bought it from them. NONE of these ever saw the inside of a
theater, and since many experts only deal with actual theater used posters, why
WOULD they ever come in contact with these? The fact that Ed Poole has never
seen these in person is just one more coffin nail of proof that these are
surely fakes.
But PLEASE all of you quit bickering amongst yourselves and turn your
indignation against those who made these repros and sold them as originals, and
most of all, let's all ostracize those who continue to sell them. We will help
the new collectors keep from being cheated as so many others were, and we will
likely cause these dealers to quit selling them, as they see that the small
profit they make from continuing to cheat people is far more than offset by the
money they lose from collectors refusing to deal with them!
