I think that seasonal factor - Summer's historically bad for the business and the stock - as well the economic downturn and especially the hit on discretionary spending caused by gas prices, as well as longer-term problems growing the business, have a lot more to do with recent discounting and special sales than either the impact of sellers' strikes on a $37 billion international conglomerate.
As for death throes, it may be that eBay's stock, even at 60% off its all time highs, is still over-priced by far, but that's an argument for stock analysts. It could tumble and crash twice, and each of us, even the biggest, would still be an ant to the eBay elephant. No doubt quite correct, that's why there is more thna one speculator speculating that we might be seeing the beginning of death throes. The lates news, that the View Item page is to go another overhaul to make it "less complicated" also indicates that without admitting it, they are hearing what sellers have been telling them for the past 2-3 years - not much good having lots of bells and whistles festooning a train that doesn't run reliably to start with. The discounts, free listing days, cheap listing days are also used when the natives are restless. It's their brand of throwing a few colourful trinkets out there - always happens after a bout of bad press (increasing) or more active complaining such as roling seller "strikes" and the like. I would say that very few businesses have given lots of discounts when business is booming! In this case, it is surely earnings related. If they can get their second quarter numbers up, the stock price will likely keep from tanking for another 30-90 days, and that lets all the insiders sell another bushel full of stock (which they have the company buy back through their buy back program). Pretty smart on their part, as long as they are not breaking any laws. I was ask, along with many if not all of you, if I wanted to sign up for a 2% credit bonus on purchases till June 30th. Then I got an email that untill June 30th they would triple that amount to 6% on any purchase. Then I get a card in the mail that I can get 10% of any eBay purchase with paypal up to a $1000 untill June 30th. Now they just added $10 off shipping till June 30th. If I buy a $1000 item I would get a total of $170 off! This would be paid by eBay. Even with their higher fees I don't think they will quite take $170 from the seller in fees. Well maybe close. June 30th is the end of the quarter and it might be eBay's fiscal year end. Are they trying to increase sales revenue for the year end? It will have to hit their bottom line. These seem like very drastic measures. I am waiting and watching for more discounts and if there is something I want enough and can afford. Something nice from ebay. P.S. I am doing a Western show in Cody, Wyoming Friday and Saturday. Will have some nice posters there for sale. If you are anywhere near come on by.
