Now this is off topic in regards to movie posters but the economy has hit the collectable market in general...
I noticed this in a big way last Saturday. I went to Carlisle, Pa for one of the biggest swap meets for cars in the country. Usually there is anywhere between a mile and three mile backup just to get off the turnpike exit. As we approached the toll plaza there were very few cars, we zoomed right through with easy pass. We thought the car show may have been a different week. Nope, the fairgrounds were open, with tons of vendors and cars for sale with very little customers. I thought I was in a ghost town, I swore I saw a few tumbleweeds. This place was so packed before, it used to take us at least 30 minutes to walk one of the aisle, it took 5. At any of the food vendors it took more than 10 minutes to place an order, this time perusing the menu took longer. It was strange to say the least, it was like going to a baseball game only being the only ones there. -----Original Message----- From: MoPo List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Franc Sent: Wednesday, October 08, 2008 3:39 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOPO] Movie Paper and The Domestic / World Economy I clearly see things slowing. There are not as many big orders from my website or from Ebay. Items still sell but they are usually the medium to lower end items. For a while I was flooded with international orders given the strength of the Euro but now given the dim financial outlook that has spread to the rest of the world, these foreign orders have slowed also. I did go to a collectibles show last weekend in LA and it was my distinct impression that there was not a hell of a lot of purchasing going on but I have no way to confirm this. Also there were several regular dealers who were conspicuously absent. Maybe they felt it was not worth the time or the expense. Even the crowds of autograph hounds seem to have thinned out. I'll be interested in seeing the results of some upcoming high profile auctions next month. I know it is perhaps a bit early to tell - but I am curious how those of us that make even a partial living on selling posters and memorabilia (include comics, props, toys, autographs, cards, etc.) are doing. Are you finding big drops or is memorabilia holding its value? What do you forsee in the immediate and long term future for material? Are some things selling better due to the general downswing? (I.E. Certain types of buyers finding security or at least tangibility in object investment vs. financial investment?) Are some things hardest hit due to the above? Are folks going to the movies more as they did when times were tough in the good old depression? How fares our international brethren on all topics? Just thought it might be illucidating to share our issues, concerns and observations.
