Bruce,
I just checked your sales results database for all Gildersleeve
posters, and the prices weren't as high as I thought they would be,
so I guess Gildy may not be as red hot as I had assumed. Maybe I'll
bid on that Gildersleeve's Ghost poster after all, although I think
it's going to sell for around $200, which is more than I want to
spend. I suppose the bidders on this poster may not be Gildy fans.
Like you say, they may appreciate the horror/comedy angle, but I hope
they're not buying it for the sex angle, because the only couple I
see on this poster are a woman and a gorilla.
By the way, if anyone is willing to sell me their nice condition
Gildersleeve posters for $6 each, I know where I can quickly double
my money.
But seriously, I'm a little surprised that there is some interest in
Gildersleeve posters, since Gildy is not really part of our popular
culture. Other radio characters like The Shadow, Captain Midnight,
The Lone Ranger, etc., have survived to varying degrees in people's
minds, but if Tom Martin were to poll 100 random people on the street
and ask them who the Great Gildersleeve is, I think only 2 people
would know the answer.

I don't want to suggest that posters featuring old-time radio stars
aren't red-hot, and I have not looked up who the high bidders are,
but isn't it slightly possible that one or more of the bidders for
THIS half-sheet are bidding on the horror/sex/cartoony angle,
rather than some great love of the Great Gildersleeve?
Look at the poster at http://www.emovieposter.com/gallery/inc/
large_size.php?lot=2o032, look at the taglines used to sell this
movie (("Weird...Wild-Eyed...and What Fun"; "A haunted house- ful
of goofy, ghostly guffaws with Gildy in the mad-cap middle!";
"You'll SCREAM with laughter!"; "Everything from spooks to nuts! As
Gildy and a giant gorilla tussle over a buxom blonde who
vanishes..just like that!"; "EERIE HILARITY -- when a pair of
spooks and a giant gorilla try to pal up with Throcky!"; "-with the
Prince of Pomposity at his befuddled best... As he pits his wits
against a giant gorilla, a vanishing Venus and a pair of goofy
spooks!").
What's NOT to love about this poster? And $84 sure doesn't buy much
in this crazy mixed-up world of ours. What's wrong with spending it
on a really cool funky 64 year old poster, especially since you get
a really cool free limited edition T-shirt also?
And Roger, I will take one dozen of these at $12 each, and I
imagine I will have no trouble finding them, since that is exactly
double what they SHOULD sell for!

Dear Ask Mopo,
Why is that whenever Bruce sells a Great Gildersleeve poster, it
sells for good money. Who are these people that buy Gildersleeve
posters, and why do they want them? I want them, because I collect
radio-related stuff, but I can't imagine anyone else wanting them.
These posters should sell for about $6 each, in my opinion. Does
anyone really know who the Great Gildersleeve is anymore? (Well,
Glenn Taranto might, since he's even heard of Wheeler and Woolsey.)
