Erik Nitsche supposedly did the other No Way Out formats, but how is it
known who did what? I seem to remember there is a signature on at least one of
the Paul Rand posters, but are the others attributed in the pressbook?
I'd agree that Birdman head looks very much like early Bob Peak, though
obviously the overall design is much more abstract than his usual work.
Frankenheimer certainly seems to have shown a liking for the Saul Bass style
later on,
as Saul Bass titles and (unused) poster designs were commissioned for
Seconds and Grand Prix, which were produced as well as directed by him.
Perhaps he
suggested a Saul Bass style for this earlier film, even if Bob Peak did it.
For about 5 years now I've been waiting for the release of an authorised book
on Saul Bass by Pat Kirkham, but the publishing date keeps getting delayed -
approval problems with a member of the Saul Bass estate was one reason I was
told. If that ever comes out, it may help these discussions considerably!

Yes, that's the theory that was knocking round a while back, (subsequent to
the sole Bass design credit), that it was Bass with Peak addition.
Grabbed a couple of heads off WC, 3 sht images, compared to 1 sht in
photoshop, heads appear to be exact same art, just cropped differently.
Other than style being similar to Bass, attribution could be down to him
doing the titles, I'll dig and see if I can confirm he did titles.
Off the top of my head, incorrect attributions:
He gets credited with Nine Hours to Rama paper, which is false.
There's been confusion with No way out. Bass just did the insert, Paul Rand
the I sht, (and very large paper), can't recall right now the name of the
other designer who did title card, half sheet and 3 sht.

yes and another possibility is that the 1 sheet - which is the only poster
of the title that has a different art - can be both by Peak and Bass
Peak's face art & Bass' cells bars & birds
in other words, a "Saul Bass design"
but looking at the art I don't think there can be any doubt that Lancaster's
face on the 1 sheet is by Peak - though it isn't the exact face on the other
posters - at least by looking at photos. I only have a 1 sheet so I can't
match anything here
a separate question though.. are all other "Bass attributed" posters for
Otto Preminger films?
if so, why should anyone think Bass had any connection to this poster?
