& SF .. R.I.P. at 93 years old
Right now, Forry is having a marvelous roundtable discussion with
Karloff, the Chaneys Sr. and Jr., Lugosi, James Whale, Elsa
Lanchester, Todd Browning and many others..all having a good ol'
time!!

Reading FAMOUS MONSTERS for the first time was a rite of passage
for legions of Fifties kids who had no other outlet for their love
for these wonderful movies. It ranks right up there with seeing
your first MAD, or finding your dad's Playboy. Forry was a huge
influence on me, with his wacky sense of humor, his awful puns,
and his unabashed fan-boy sensibilities. Forry made being a geek
cool, and he never talked down to his young audience. One of my
proudest moments was getting my letter printed in FM (when I was
an adult, yet!). Even cooler was meeting FJA in 1996 at a
convention in Pasadena. I was wearing an Ed Wood shirt. I was
tongue tied as I walked up my hero. "Ed Wood!", he exclaimed. "I
was his ill-literary agent. Talk about a guy who'll do anything."
I giggled like a 12 year old, and sat down for a 30 minute chat
with this wonderful man to shoot the poop about ...what
else?...monsters, and to thank him for all the joy he had brought
into my life. It was a beautiful moment for me, and a good one for
him, I hope, although I'm sure he got that sort of fawning
adulation all the time.
Forry got ripped off by uncaring opportunists...he should have
been wealthy from his collection...but he kept his head high. He
was a class act all the way to the end. I was going to go visit
him a few weeks ago, but my ride called and had spoken with Mr.
Ackerman's assistant, who said Forry was gravely ill. News of his
death comes not unexpectedly, but I shed tears nonetheless, both
for this marvelous human being and for a part of my childhood that
has passed on with him. Your spirit lives on out here, FJA. You
were like the coolest uncle ever. Wherever you are...thanks and
love to you always.
