Todd said, "...Good for Mickey!! I believe that Mickey Rooney is one of the most talented stars..."> In the words of another great comic actor, Bert Lahr, "Ain't it da troof!?!! AIN'T it da troof!" And it is indeed true that Mickey was Box Office Number 1 in the period that Todd mentioned. I never saw "Sugar Babies" but I'm certain Rooney (along with Ann Miller, of course!) was terriffic! And Glenn is right about the "planned spontaniety" of that kind of on-stage line delivery! If you can make it seem "spur-of-the-moment," you've pulled it off! Mickey maintained that Jackie Cooper was the greatest "boy" actor of their day but look at any MGM retrospective. When any of the Mick's contemporaries, including Jackie, are asked who was the greatest talent among them, the answer is always, "Oh, Mickey!! He could do anything!" One of my prize possessions is an original 1935 lobby card from "A Midsummer Night's Dream," showing the teenaged Mickey as Puck with Olivia de Havilland in her film debut as one of the two girls in the forest. A few years back (2003) when Olivia graciously lent some badly needed true Star Power to Oscar night, Mickey was there. They met backstage and remarked to the press that it was the first time they had seen each other since they were in "Dream." Sixty-eight years had passed!! Shows that maybe Hollywood's not such a small town after all! Joe PS-- Mick's performance in "Requiem for a Heavyweight" is Oscar-caliber! Joe PPS-- Jackie Cooper, another epitomizer of my Subject title, celebrated his 87th birthday last week! This guy went from boy star to sailor to stage star (Pulver in "Mr. Roberts" tour) to tv actor and tv producer to character acting to being Perry White in the Reeve "Superman" films to being just retired!! Happy late birthday, Jackie! Joe

I saw the show several times and those same "ad-libs" appeared every time. The genius of that is he made them look fresh every night and Ann Miller played it like it was. Seriously, it takes a great talent to do it every night and make it look fresh! (he and she made the show.) what made the show great was his ad-libs. Ann Miller would frequently turn her back away from the audience because she was laughing. mbb -----Original Message----- From: Todd Feiertag <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, Sep 23, 2009 9:59 pm Subject: Re: [MOPO] Slightly OT--- Who says child stars aren't survivors???!!! #yiv2012300196 #yiv390498156 #yiv511467279 #AOLMsgPart_2_6cd62132-60ed-43ae-8c4d-d3182b909c31 .hmmessage P { PADDING-RIGHT:0px;PADDING-LEFT:0px;PADDING-BOTTOM:0px;MARGIN:0px;PADDING-TOP:0px;} #yiv2012300196 #yiv390498156 #yiv511467279 #AOLMsgPart_2_6cd62132-60ed-43ae-8c4d-d3182b909c31 BODY.hmmessage { FONT-SIZE:10pt;FONT-FAMILY:Verdana;} Hey Joe, Good for Mickey!! I believe that Mickey Rooney is one of the most talented stars, if not, THE MOST TALENTED STAR to come out of Hollywood. I believe Mickey was the most popular star in the World from about 1939 to 1941. He did it all, from silent film, all the way up to today and is still working! He's suppose to be at the CHILLER THEATRE CONVENTION in New Jersey next month. Thanks for posting that Joe!
