Thanks,
Yes, I did contact Dianne. And, she sent me the pointers below. I may try the less evasive techniques like the blow dryer. And, stop there as I am not going to try any "wet" procedure. Just looking for ideas on possibility of getting poster off glass so I can ship for linen backing without the large frame and glass.

Hello Kevin,
This is a very unusual situation, something we don't deal with very often.
My first response was, break the glass and pull the fire alarm. On second though, naa not good.
I think Diane is covering pretty much all the possible avenues.
I'm thinking? try avoid any wet method, due to to the age of paper. I would probably first approach the paper with heat from the opposite side using the glass as a shield. That means that you can use your everyday blow dryer. Then try a corner and gently pry with a flat dull knife.
Avoid any wet approach unless you really know what you are doing.
If you do get this poster off, it most likely needs backing for support after.
I'd love to see some pictures of the mess.
Best, dario.

Hi JR - Sorry, must have been asleep at the wheel here.
Sometimes, an adhesive release will work and there are several of those to try, dry and wet heat also can be used, or, a combination of all three. Paper is usually easier than photos. It can be tricky, and a slow process, but can be done successfully. It is probably best to linen back after removal.
I would not recommend trying to do it, but if someone is determined, the adhesive removers should not harm the paper at all. But if it does not seem to work, stop and let everything dry. Extra care is required with dry heat, as it is easy to burn the paper. In most cases, if steam is needed, the paper needs to get pretty wet, and the trick is to get it off in one piece, and then special care in the drying, to prevent problems.
Possibly, Dario may have some other tricks I am not aware of.

Hmmm... I would have thought one of our restorers on this list would respond, but no one seems to be around just now. A couple of thoughts:
1) You could try heat. Take a hair dryer to the front of the glass, the glass will heat up and the poster might release. Don't get it hot enough to burn (but I'm not sure a hair dryer could do that).
2) You could try steam. This would be tricky. You take a steam iron, hold it over the back of the poster and hit the steam button to jet some steam onto the poster. It might release. But since this is a 100-year old poster, the steam would wet the paper and could cause it to fall to pieces, so maybe not such a good idea.
If you're going to send it to someone for restoration anyway, why not ask them how to get it off the glass? They might want to do it themselves, even if it means shipping the glass to them. Maybe there's someone within driving distance who would know how to do this?

ANyone know How to remove/restore a 100 year old poster STUCK to the frame glass? It is very fragile and before I send to the restoration company I want to remove it from the glass. ABout a 10" section has stuck to the glass. Any ideas?
