The ending of MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS, where all Richard Dreyfuss' old
students play his life's work as a surprise, makes me tear up every
single time I see it. Of course, I'm a music teacher, so I'm a cheap
date when it comes to this movie in general.
I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER, starring Gene Hackman & Melvyn Douglas, has
absolutely the most depressing finish to a film ever. I wept
uncontrollably for a long time after seeing it back in 1970. (It was on
a double bill with BONNIE & CLYDE. Yeah, I was a wreck when I left THAT
theater!) It's a really well-made movie, but I would never watch it
again. Very tough to sit through.
