In the most technical sense, Cecil B. DeMille was not working on a movie (as a Director) at the time he appeared in Sunset Boulevard. He was of course, involved in Pre-Production for other films and his next film as a Director wouldn't be until a few years later. During the time of the shoot he was in development for the film he would do with Burt Lancaster, The Greatest Show on Earth.
The film set that was created for DeMille to be on for Sunset Boulevard was for a film that had wrapped almost a year earlier. The film was a big hit for DeMille and they were able to easily find the costumes and set pieces to re-create a small portion of the earlier DeMille film for the establishing shots that were needed for Sunset Boulevard. Rather than give the title away, I will just say that the Dance of the Seven Veils played a big part in the DeMille film. Before the Fred Astaire Stage closed at Paramount about 3 years ago I used to work on that stage all the time as that is where music scoring was done.
