You're either a relatively well-informed DeMille enthusiast, and playing with us, or you've forgotten that THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH was done with Charlton Heston. DeMille entertained the idea of Lancaster; the conventional wisdom was that the part WAS Burt Lancaster. DeMille preferred Kirk Douglas, but Douglas would not work for half price, DeMille's dictum. The reasoning being that working in a DeMille picture would be worth it to the performer in the long run. After DeMille had DARK CITY screened for himself several times and JULIUS CAESAR, he decided on HESTON. An amusing detail is that DeMille noticed Heston waiving at him from behind the wheel of a convertible, on the Paramount lot -- and appreciated his style. Woohoo!
