it's a lookalike - close, but not monroe. kim novak is in the upper right
corner of the upper card, wearing an off the shoulder peach-colored dress. the
monroe doppelganger actually appears onscreen with kim for a couple of seconds
in the film but she doesn't move like monroe, doesn't have the screen presence
of her. and doesn't that apply to the lobby as well? did monroe ever look that
clueless in a photo? she was the most photogenic woman around. plus this
woman's bustline appears smaller and the facial structure is slightly off.
maybe if she just appeared in the card it would be more plausible, but this
woman is in the film.

and logically - how could this have happened? by the time this was shot, monroe
was the hottest property at 20th century fox making smash hit after smash hit.
would zanuck have let her do this? would howard hughes not have publicized it
to the hilt? would jane russell - or, for that matter, kim novak - never have
mentioned this? would the reviewers and viewers at the time not have brought it
up? she had starred in three hugely successful films in 1953 - "niagra",
"millionaire" and "gentlemen prefer blondes" so she was extremely busy and very
recognizable. the idea that she could/would show up as an extra in this b-level
film and have it been kept secret for all these years is crazy. she is arguably
the most scrutinized, written-about star of the 20th century.

it doesn't add up. it sounds like some collector saw one of these cards and a
rumor started that has turned into a sort of urban legend.

but that's just my opinion.

Interesting. Just looked at the set on Heritage. According to them,
she is on TWO cards, #3 and #6.

Subject: [MOPO] Question:Does Marilyn
Monroe Appear in a Lobby Card From THE FRENCH LINE (1954)

Hi, Everyone,

Years ago, I heard that during the filming of THE FRENCH LINE
(Jane Russell,1954), Marilyn Monroe was on the set visiting Jane Russell,
who'd become her friend after they made Gentlemen Prefer Blondes together
the previous year. I always heard that Marilyn Monroe appeared in one of the
lobby cards.  Recently, I acquired 6 lobby cards from that film, one of
which (card # 3) is a  song-and-dance sequence with Russell and
another brunette in the foreground---behind them are 4 men in tuxedos and
cowboy hats and a dozen beautiful women, one of whom I'm certain is Marilyn
Monroe. Why don't we hear more mention of "the Marilym Monroe 'French Line'
lobby card"?   I would think it would be quite collectable.
Can anyone offer any insight into this?  Hey, if that isn't Marilyn
Monroe, I'll eat all six of the lobby cards for
breakfast!

Thanks in advance,

Rick
