wow that sounds like some cool pics Rudy ... would have made a great
book!!!,, the ballyhoo and exploitation
always was interesting to me.. in Toledo Harry Strong president and
founder of Strong motion picture electric lamphouse projection
company wrote several books on the subject. Also the old shomantrade
review, Boxoffice and quigleys all had great trade magazines
like international projectionist and more.. these also featured ideas
for
shows and theatre fronts.. I was lucky to meet Jack baker who from
Toledo was
a thetare man and also known as DR>SILKINI in the 30s and 40 50s 60s
who had a traveling spook show.. he was legendary. My 1st sign for my
shop was hand painted by a veteran showcard painter named Abe Stram
who did all the Burlesque
signs for Rose Larose and the Town hall Burlesque.(fetured in Leslie
Zemeckis film Behind the Burly Q) now on Video and showtime( PLUG)
.. he used a russian squirrel hair brush all by hand in one shot
poster paint that jumped from the showcards..
I was able to get him to do several signs in the vinatge feel for me
,,
sign art is a lost art now that they use photoshop and vinyl
lettering..
the standees where made by hand and some would have movable motorized
things
and would be made in the local area by Union sign men.
wow they used lots of bright color and glitter also,, it was a
spectacle
and made movies over the top fun and excitement..
I would love to make new items on that level .. the banners and
standard standees are trite,, I actually had a 3 d idea for jurrassic
park where we would make dinos in 3d foam cast.. jumping out of the
standee however Universal already had a 3d paper one that was similar
but not as I would have made it,,
can YOu tell im into the promotional ad stuff..:)
now days its alll done on trailers and video on computers as I
suspected..
But thats why the old school would work even better now is its
unusaual..
would be costly.. but would build more excitement then redundant
trailers that
all look the same.
