>great Phil. thanksfor the info! that bood sounds awesome.. the
promotion advance men really made the movie exciting. The would have
aman actually handle districts and inmy area we had some Huge
circuits, one being the " Jack Armstrong circuit" who owned small
theaters, drive ins and morein citsy all around nortwest OHio,,I was
able to meet many of the people befiore they disbanded and I was able
togetmemorabilia before bulldozers desytroyed many of the old drive
ins and theatres..Ive seen so many torn down it makes you sick.. we
had the Paramount,
and about 6 drive ins.. the jesses james, telegraph, starlight,
Miracle mile, and more,, the colony theatre, showcase cinemas was just
torn down liek severl weeks ago that was owned by the national
amusements ( Sumner Redstone)
theyhad the last remaiing 70mm arched screen.. I saw Tora tora tora
there
and they still had " Projectionists".. now its all digital multiplex
stadium seats smaller screens.. I hear that there are still some nice
venues like the Imax theatres....I would be curious what theatres are
left... Margolis did a book in 80s called " Ticket to Paradise" that
showed old theatres that had
closed .. and Naylor did one called american Picture palaces...
I have a gropu of oriinal PRomo materialfrom 1939 from when MGM had a
local promo man.. MGM had fantasic promotional magazines and the
lions Roar thatgave ideas to theatre owners kind like the pressbooks
did. The one i have has Wizard of Oz.. so its pretty cool.. the 30s
up till 50s seemed like the best time of studio promotion. 60s and
70s.. was soft and basically it was ok for newbies
and the Horror dribve in genre but seemed by 1970 the studio system
was gone..
as MGM had thier auction and also 20th century fox.. Universal and WB
never seemed to save as much or Paramount... or its all sitting
somewhere :)
all interesting Movie trivia.. hope it gets saved for future
generations.
