I was interested to hear about the results of the tests on the Woodstock Style
C one sheets and other authentication services. Apparently multiple microscopic
pieces of paper are removed and forensically tested to determine the date of
printing. I wonder how this works with linen backed posters.
There are obviously some incredibly talented linen backers who can take
fragments of a poster and make it look pristine. Many restored posters have had
signifcant paper replacement and airbrushing, etc. The paper used for
replacement of damaged sections is likely to be from a totally different year
to the original paper so this would surely make authentication difficult.
Does anyone know if it is possible to authenticate a heavily restored and
airbrushed linen backed poster without actually removing it from the linen?
