Yes we do have a high power light table that does reveal all the portions of the poster that has been restored. We can still take a micro paper sample from even a linen backed or restored poster to get it forensically tested. But yes, if we did make mistake and sample a portion of the restored poster that portion would show up as a different year since restorers to my knowledge are using more modern paper. That is another reason we invested in the light table so that that would reduce our chances of making a mistake. But to reduce these chances even further, about 10 posters ago we started taking 2 samples from each poster (from randomly chosen areas) so again, reducing the chances of getting it wrong. Apparently multiple microscopic pieces of paper are removed and forensically tested to determine the date of printing. I wonder how this works with linen backed posters. There are obviously some incredibly talented linen backers who can take fragments of a poster and make it look pristine. Many restored posters have had signifcant paper replacement and airbrushing, etc. The paper used for replacement of damaged sections is likely to be from a totally different year to the original paper so this would surely make authentication difficult. Does anyone know if it is possible to authenticate a heavily restored and airbrushed linen backed poster without actually removing it from the linen?
