Yes we do have a high power light table that does reveal all the portions of the poster that has been restored.
We can still take a micro paper sample from even a linen backed or restored poster to get it forensically tested. But yes, if we did make mistake and sample a portion of the restored poster that portion would show up as a different year since restorers to my knowledge are using more modern paper. That is another reason we invested in the light table so that that would reduce our chances of making a mistake. But to reduce these chances even further, about 10 posters ago we started taking 2 samples from each poster (from randomly chosen areas) so again, reducing the chances of getting it wrong.
