For my two cents, I believe that all concerned should consider what they are
publishing on a public forum. You are all talking about the reputation of
Grey Smith and Heritage Auctions which is a prestigious company that serves
your own needs as well as those of collectors.
Grey Smith puts his position forward quite correctly and succinctly: "Many
of your know me personally, and know how hard I work to maintain my
credibility and reputation. I have taken thousands of consignments in my
eleven years with Heritage Auctions, and have sold well over $50 million in
movie posters. In all that time, I cannot recall anyone ever accusing me or
Heritage of stealing their movie posters before this! In fact most of our
consignments come from repeat sellers and their friends, and I believe our
consignor satisfaction ratings compare favorably with those of any of the
world's auction houses.
If I were to even begin to denigrate these two venerable institutions, I
would be more than sure that I possessed documented, third-party evidence of
purported wrong-doing. For example, a list of material sent; a list of
material received; a comparison of lists to sales; invoices, wire transfer
forms; e-mails admitting or indicating misconduct by one party or another.
Something substantial and damning.
Short of that type of evidence, it is simply inappropriate for two industry
leaders and several wannabe's to engage in indelicate ad hominem attacks
upon one another.
