Oh, such a wonderful analysis! And indeed yet another superb, pungent
reply from the great Tom Martin, lacking any brevity, of course, but
as Tommy Barr so brilliantly places Tom's writing in such a gracious
literary context, they have the stream of consciousness of James
Joyce. I may be ungracious, yeah perhaps a Philistine (?), but I
feel that Tom's stream is really a torrent ........ but, with my usual
humility, I stand to be corrected ..............?

Subject: Re: [MOPO] where do you get your facts on Posters ?
so Ive thought about this alot... when Ed poole called me I mentioned
that when I was seeking info on some 20s posters Bruce Hershenson was
one of few that offered me help..he said well Bruce was a founding
member in our" Learn about posters site" since then Ive see countless
guys start sites that sayd they can offer ways to spot forgeries and
all.. on early posters that doest seem to be a issue except the rare
auction posters of King kong and dracula types.. but what gets hard is
the newer ones.as thats when bootlegs seemed to flourish.... except
that nobody agrees.. because when I title was made the studio would
have different printers run the job in different parts of USA so in
litho back in 80s the runs where not the same always and they even
modified some art etc.... when Lucasfilm re-releasd the same art for
Raiders and a few titles even though it was printed later it bore the
same nss and all. then the bootlegger released the posters with the
nss and all on them...however most where 27 x 40 rolled. so it gets
very complicated to be a dealer and seller of posters even if you try
to be 100% upfront as the channels of poster selling are mostly
underground sources and where not meant to be sold.. when I looked at
Learn about Posters site they mentiaoned the posters sold by media
play and sam goody musicland.. I remeber those as they where one of my
customers,,,,they claimed he had limited license to do runs of posters
then...who knows if that was true,, I dont/// Today I was at
salvation army and found a bootleg of my directors Megaphone that I
created years ago.and make .. when a firm in Hollywood told me they
would bootleg me I thought they where just joking... they did.. and
this one I picked up today was honestly about as good as mine... some
how they sourced out all the same materials and part with exception of
a few...I have mixed feelings... part of me thought,," may creation
copiy" and all the sales I would lost due to them doing that... the
other part of me smiled as I thought... wowo they liked it so much
they copied it verbatim.. so I thought they like my ideas...that and
ten cents will get me a coffee.. but today at the chriopractor was a
sign on the TV screen it said" Imagination is more Important then
Knowledge" by albert Einstein.... I thought oh really? then I
remebered Disney was fired from his job at a newspaper as he lacked
imagination they said....and many more,,,all rejected for ideas/// the
other day at a flea market my mouth dropped when Two Guys that would
seem so not Educated started discusson on Books and authors and
History.. the one man a Blck man who as served time in prison and the
other a Bker type that neither looked like book worms started talking
about allthe authors that served time like socretes, and galilao and
more,, these guys where really into authors and are scholars,, my
reading hahs been limited to technical books mostly and movie
related... I rrarely read fiction or anything in storys partly my
eyesight and partly im ADD... so I take in a lot fast but long books
and me...I cant even watch LINcoln as I heard its a long film.... yet
I write like Im on some drug...:) anyways I was thinking where did
everyone learn about POsters from who and who are considered the best
sources in info.. what universities, whatindustry sources,,as for me
It was the newspapers like MCW, classic Images, Big reel,, then the
POSTER PRICE ALMANAC by john Kisch an also Jon warren and learn about
posters and Morries catalogs, ebay. the french and uk auctions poster
books,,and simply dealers and collectors and being in the biz since
1977,,many of the collectors taught me many things...and I have much
to learn still as I knew little about the Horror genre... But my Kid
likes it and he also liked the adventure films and even silent,,my son
knows mare about film then me...hes 27 I would think the best resource
as a reference seems to be learn about posters as a unbiased and with
dates and reference ,, what a volume of work they have done I applaud
Sue and ED Poole and all the dealers that support them..I would love
to hear how others have learned about posters and collecting Movie
stuff...I know Rudy and others all have contributed and think thats
great,,why there is bickering eludes me as in order to keep the hobby
alive and also the history it needs everyones input to share this
forward imho..speak up old poster geezers ! pay it forward ! before
its lost in history thanks Tom...Ps I did meet a guy in Horror'' Jack
baker from Toledo who did spook shows in the 40s aka Dr, Silkini" hes
in the book ghostmasters by mark walker.. my friend mom was in the
show as some other friend and Tery made illusion props. Jack also
distributed film lkke Ed wood stuff and aztec mummy vs Robot monster
-I had 35mm prints i sold in 1992,, anyways Jack was old school
showbiz when Ballyhoo was big... he made lots of money with the
traveling sppokshows. asylum of Horrors! he was a great guy we spoke
several times.. and I met a magcian named John Calvert who was in
Movies and some serials i think. cool guy...
