I got into Movie posters by accident... in 1976 I was a booking agent
in Toledo when I decorated my office I did it in 8x10 stills, old movie
tins andtheatrical lights, directorchairs and Movie posters.. the
posters where Portal reproductions of some great posters like the black
cat, GWTW, shirley Temple, Marx bros, and many more.. the posters where
printed on flat paper stock so they where vivid and about 20 x 24.
people that came in loveed the art.. It was a friend that came in one
day and said You like allthis hollywood maybe you could sell these (
vintage old 1920s Photoplay movie magazines... so withat that some old
16mm films I had and Posters I had got from cinema geeks locally and in
film collectors world I started Mail order in 77 - 38 years ago,,, what
atracted me then and still now was the overall ccrfat of filmm from the
players and directors , the set people, technicians, the deal makers,
the makeup and special effects artist, the advertising dept and most of
all the Movies themselves and the presentation or exhibition and its
equipment in theaters,,,so whether I had a original 1920s poster or a
clear sharp replica didnt matter to me as it was the overall experiene
and ambiance of the movies that I enjoyed... heck the entire industry is
built on illusions of making stuff look real that isnt right?? so why
not create a room or Movie den or office witha movie theme?? I thought
of this this am and thought how things happen many imes not because of
the cost of things but the budget and the desire to do things with what
we have.... example.. Paul Mccartney... he originally wanted a Fender
USA bass howevere he had limited funds,,,, so He found a unknown little
German bass called the Hofner... looked like a violin and was syemtrical
for a lefty,, even had a odd sound however it became his trademark
sound and bass..not because he really wanted one but he loved to play
music and wanted a bass... so smae with posters... if you really love
movies and watching them...the art is justthe decor that surounds and
offers the ambiance and conjuring memories,, and unless you have a 100K
for a original Frankenstien laying around...you can get a reproduction
for 20 that was taken off a original poster and it wont cause you to go
broke and lose the farm... and best it will I promice make you feel
justthe same as it isthe same artwork they used in the originakl
release... plus.. once framed (0% of the loookers would never know if
its a original or repro anyway.. these days even the long term pros are
fooled so printing has become almost flawless.so if yureally lke movie
art itself I strongly urge that you dont overlook reproductions... I
have over 400 lobby cards that if genuine would cost 1000's today,,
however you can actually own them for alittle over 5.00 and after
looking at somerecent sales of postsr even some of the recent ones dont
bring alot... and these are of the desirable titles you will never see
in your lifetime anyway... so why not get some and enjoy and share the
images with others now and save money? I think everyone of all ages and
resources should share the art and films and love for cinema not just
horde for hordeing sake and a few investors that lock them up and are
never seen again.. IMHO
