On the other hand - on the issue of costumes - I personally know the consignor of the "Amado Mio" dress from "Gilda" - and was in the bidding room when it was first acquired for $25,000 back in 2000 at Butterfield's/Bonham's. (See pics below.) Today it sold in NY for $161,000 ($130,000 hammer). Even after all the buyer's and seller's premiums are paid, the consignor, who is just a fan like me and was never an investor, is getting a nice payday.
