That's interesting, Jeff. The photo of the Hayworth costume I web hosted below
was taken in 2000 at that L.A. sale. "Casablanca," "The Wizard of Oz," the
Universal horror classics - as well as "Metropolis" - all feel eternal, but I
wonder how many people under 50 years old TODAY - even know who Rita Hayworth
was, let alone what she did in "Gilda." Twenty years ago, I would have said
that she will always be considered a mainstream Hollywood legend, but today she
feels like a cult star in a cult film who will never top Audrey Hepburn nor
Marilyn Monroe in terms of popularity. Not a great actress but a super dancer.

Dave,
I had the chance to go to Bonhams here in LA, for the preview... and this
costume was not behind any glass or plexi.. it was on a form, right on the
floor, in front of some GILDA posters on the wall behind it.
Anyone could touch it if they wanted .. and some were....
Beautiful.. and it was on display right next to Hayworth's other dress from the
film, The Loves of Carmen.

from "Gilda" - and was in the bidding room when it was first acquired for
$25,000 back in 2000 at Butterfield's/Bonham's. (See pics below.) Today it
sold in NY for $161,000 ($130,000 hammer). Even after all the buyer's and
seller's premiums are paid, the consignor, who is just a fan like me and was
never an investor, is getting a nice payday.
