Understood Zeev. Thanks. All the more reason we need to figure out how to attract buyers/new collectors. Morrie Everett tried to get everyone together a few years ago at cinevent to talk about it but it was a bit like the town church scene from Blazing Saddles. To Toochis’ excellent point, many people collect paper for the art. The French advertising material is a great example(that is one of my main collectables if anyone has some they want to sell or trade). I really think it comes down to exposure. The public still doesn’t know this hobby exists. When I built MPE, the one question I never thought to ask was how many collectors are there? I have spoken with many dealers and auction houses and the consensus is 3-5K total worldwide(regularly buying. Not the occasional or one-off, etc). That is an astonishing number. Even given the fact that this hobby is somewhat unique in that the material was never intended for public sale it is still an astounding number. The advertising material Toochis referred to was not intended for public sale either but that hobby appears to be a fairly good sized and thriving one with brick and mortar shops/galleries existing and stable if not increasing prices. Ironically what the younger generation(s) seem to be responding to are the alternative posters(Mondo, etc). These are completely graphics driven. If you look at the amount of twitter followers Mondo and the upper tier artists primarily doing this material have, you will see very high numbers. Their releases sell out within minutes(which may be a bit questionable but who knows. They have built a hell of a brand over the years). Peter, I said we don’t support the hobby and you said you take issue with that. Yet, you yourself admitted “The room is dead. Most of the attendees are watching movies, not buying posters”. Well, where are the poster buyers? Where’s their support? At any rate, when I said “WE” I certainly did not mean just dealers, even though a mere fraction of “dealers” attend this, or any other show for that matter, either by buying a table or attending as guests. And as I said, this is true of all shows, not just Cinevent. That is what I’m talking about. Zeev From: MoPo List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of peter contarino Sent: February-26-15 11:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOPO] Will Cinevent take place this year? Allen, That will never happen. Hershenson doesn’t even bother to attend or support Cinevent. HA would laugh at Grey if he suggested it. As David said it really is an act of philanthropy or more to the point a labor of love. The problem I see coming is that although it is not a money maker for Steve H, he has the benefit of it being more or less on auto-pilot as it has been the same show at the same venue for decades. That is not to say he doesn’t put a lot of effort into it, don’t misunderstand. It is just exponentially easier to keep doing what he has been doing forever than upending and not only finding a new venue but also rethinking marketing and so forth that will be required to get attendance up, because attendance is the real issue. I will have to take issue with you Zeev. If you are referring to dealers, we have been supporting this event forever. I could make more $$ out of my own room than buying tables and sitting behind them like a caged animal(“that thar is what we call a dealer son, they are an endangered species…”). If you are referring to collectors rather, Zeev, then I will take issue with that statement as well. An event must do what it takes to draw people. I don’t care what attendance numbers have been claimed over the past few years, the fact is that poster dealers have been outnumbering poster collectors for awhile now. The room is dead. Most of the attendees are watching movies, not buying posters. To Dave R’s point, and as Ade points out, it is largely a social event for us to see our poster friends. All well and good, this is certainly the best part for me, but if we are getting back to the matter at hand, carrying on a major show, and moreover the future of same, we must talk about the reality of what this show has become, why, and how to address it going forward. Terrible venue. Terrible date. Memorial weekend is a giant pain in the ass for people to travel and be away from their families. No marketing. Ohio State University is one of the largest schools in the country and happens to be in Columbus. 60K students. Even 1% would yield 600 attendees. But they are out of school mere weeks earlier. It seems that if you want to inject new blood, this would be a fantastic source to tap. Hold the event a few weeks earlier and paper the campus, hit college radio, call the local news and get them to do a segment. They would eat it up. And so on. These are just a few ideas off the cuff. I’m sure there are many other things that could be done. Auction. There was a time when the auction was a pretty decent event. With one exception the past several auctions have yielded nearly an 80% pass rate. Draw your own conclusions. So. What to do? I can’t see the southeast as viable. We have never hosted a real event and it would take some time and money to grow it. The West coast would be a hump for many of the dealers and it already holds shows. Major cities like NYC and Chicago are cost prohibitive. Dealers barely cover expenses now. Honestly the best suggestion is Austin. Everybody wants to go there even without an event happening. It is a great city and supports the arts in a major way. I think a poster show could do really well there. Tie it in with a Film event and throw in a decent auction and you may well have a winner. Of course this comes full circle: who wants to put the time and effort into this? I would certainly support it and I would be willing to put additional resources into programming Movie Poster Exchange to host the auction in real-time online. I will be in the minority however. This hobby feels like a race to the bottom and I see very little effort by dealers to grow it. Hi Zeev et al, I can think of several reasons why I could not organize a show: 1. I do not know the 1st (or 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc..) thing regarding conventions. 2. I have a 5 year old daughter who states that I never play with her (after coming home from kicking the soccer ball ball around in the park for 2 hours). 3. My wife really enjoys spending $ on our little girl, which means I need to work a lot to keep the wife-a-roni happy (happy wife, happy life) 4. I have a full time job in health care, in which I could work a 14 hour day every day of the week (and have done 2x this year so far, see #3 above). Seriously, though ... When I read that several locations were being 'tossed around' ... I naturally wanted any new location to be closer to where I live, so I facetiously suggested Charlotte. I know that the only way anything (and I mean anything) can live / progress / improve ... is for a constant flow of new blood ... Charlotte is one of the fastest growing areas in the US, a nice climate (but not in the summer), lots of $ ... #1 (or 2) in US banking, pro football, AAA baseball (both stadiums downtown). That being said, there are no heavy hitters in posters that could pull it off (that I am aware of). Alas, the state of NC ended tax breaks for the movie industry this year. If there is to be a convention in a new location, it would take $$$, time, effort to 'do it right'. Skills in marketing, planning, communication, events, even throw in a super sweet auction. I know of 2 entities that would be able to pull it off professionally without a hitch ... emovieposter (Bruce) and Heritage (Grey). Those 2 guys command respect, and 1000s of people listen. ad p.s. I'll still buy the 1st round if I ever make it to a convention. Cleveland is obvious, Chicago not so obvious. Crazily enough, one of the better kept secrets is the Hyatt Regency O'Hare. Flight crews stay there; rooms are moderately priced and clean and it's cheap to host events - as every industry, from largest to wildest to tiniest, hosts something there each year. Free shuttle to and from the airport - and the hotel is a short walk to the Metro that takes you downtown in 30 minutes for $5. NO car rental required. Hyatt is a pricey name, but it's the cheapest property in greater Chicago because it's near the airport in Rosemont and deep in the Chicago suburbs. -d.
