I think there are some really talented artists that are utilized for the poster prints—and some are really fun as they have the benefit of hindsight on to which key scenes have become iconic, though that wasn’t the case at the time as no one knew.
That being said, they are just professional fan art and though they claim to keep the print run down, it is still a digital image that is printed and printed and printed, so I don’t see how these will hold their value especially after variant after variant of these posters are made by different artists and companies, who want a slice of the action before the fan art bubble bursts—I mean I like “JAWS” and “The Goonies”, but I wouldn’t want twenty versions of one-sheets to hang on the wall. And for prices (for some pieces) in the 2K plus arena, you could almost commission Roger Kastel (“JAWS”) and Drew Struzan (“The Goonies”) to do a drawing at least, that would be more interesting to me. Personally, I’m not too interested in the new art, until I can find all of the old art—the classic posters that are all holy grails in the poster world. For instance, the Academy Library has a three sheet to “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (Universal, 1923) that will be a fantastic image to see—I know what it looks like from the pressbook, but to see it in full stone-litho color, that will blow Mondo away, though I am not sure who the artists for those posters is, doesn’t feel like Karoly Groz’s work, but not sure. As of today, they don’t have it restored (I last contacted them about this in June of 2014), so it might be another year or two, but am looking forward to seeing it. Plus, I know Ron Chaney and his clan are working on two tomes regarding Lon Sr. and Jr. (a book each), so that would be great in his family’s book. I have a Hirschfeld drawing or two that has Lon, Sr. that he can use as they haven’t been published elsewhere yet. But, it is nice to see the interest in the artwork, it is just a fad like Beanie-Babies, which lulled everyone into thinking those plush bears were limited and then changed their modus operandi and went for quantity chasing the green and gold bears only, sad, but a repetitive cycle. -d > On Aug 10, 2016, at 7:09 AM, Kirby McDaniel <[email protected]> wrote: > > The home of Mondo, is, I believe, right here in Austin. > > When these folks came on the scene, I thought I’d buy some directly as they > came out and see how they would go. > > I got a very RUDE reception from one of the honchos over there, who told me, > in effect, that they would not knowingly sell to dealers.
