I kind of lean towards ‘greed’, though I think more correctly it can represent
an inflexible or possibly immature business practice. If you have an immediate
sale/turnaround in play, then your profit margin can absolutely be lower than
the normal mark-up you need, but some people are just not able to adjust from
their theoretical benchmark. Something similar happens when people continue to
list an item way above market value. It might eventually sell, but if it takes
years and years, then it might mean that you overpriced and inflation lowered
your price for you.

People are free of course, to do what they want, so over time it just informs
me about with whom I should deal.

Subject: [MOPO] Right price?

All been a bit quiet here recently, so here is a hypothetical situation for you
to consider. A dealer advertises on MOPO that they are looking for a particular
poster, and you reply that you have one for sale at $500. They respond that
current auction prices are around $300, so you suggest that they would have to
wait for an auction then. You point out that they are likely (according to past
data) to be looking to sell the poster to their client for around $1500, so
your price is reasonable. Their answer is that, although they haven't been able
to find the item elsewhere, as a dealer it makes no sense to 'overpay'. Does
that in fact make sense, or are they just being greedy?
