Hello
I like this scenario and there's usually stuff at play on both sides when this occurs. When somebody is selling something, finding out that somebody "wants" it adds a little spark of greed to that seller's mind as well and suddenly something they would have gladly parted with for $50 last week becomes $125 this week because everybody knows the dealer is going to make this poster into pure gravy! Remember the wise Claude Litton (where is he these days?) who would never share what his final Chan needs were as he knew anybody with that poster would then feel he was an easy mark for a mark up?! Anyway, the old maxim about things selling for what a buyer will pay is the fence-sitting measure here but often this scenario pits two people against one another in a much more interesting battle of wallets (or stubborn greed) than just an anonymous advertised sale and/or auction with a set cost or starting bid. All been a bit quiet here recently, so here is a hypothetical situation for you to consider. A dealer advertises on MOPO that they are looking for a particular poster, and you reply that you have one for sale at $500. They respond that current auction prices are around $300, so you suggest that they would have to wait for an auction then. You point out that they are likely (according to past data) to be looking to sell the poster to their client for around $1500, so your price is reasonable. Their answer is that, although they haven't been able to find the item elsewhere, as a dealer it makes no sense to 'overpay'. Does that in fact make sense, or are they just being greedy?
