Craig, I don't know the specifics, and I don't know if there is a better price from any of the three main shippers (although I do know there is no more "surface mail" anywhere), but they are absolutely destroying international commerce with their endless price increases.
When my non-U.S. customers get their shipping quotes, they often also think there "must be a mistake", and they often say, "but I just payed half as much X years ago for the same size package". And very large packages and tubes are the worst. I don't see a bright future for selling heavy or large items internationally. It sounds like the perfect solution IS for you to go, and I very much hope that can happen.
