Helmut is largely correct. As the USPS becomes privatized, which has
been the Republican wet dream for 30 years, service will decline
precipitously as will customer service. Of course, prices will increase
dramatically as well, because - where else can you go?
as to current rates.. If I send 6 rolled one sheets to someone in NYC,
with my heavy duty tubes that cost $4.00 each, including labor, supplies
etc and my website charges them $15.00, my postage cost alone is $19.00,
so I'm losing about $10 in total on that package. This is actually one
of the reasons I have ended any regular auctions from my own website

Deutsche Post DHL have been privatized several years ago. Ever since,
the costs are constantly rising and their service is constantly declining.
A few years ago, Deutsche Post sold my local post office building to a
private investor. First chance they had, the investors kicked the post
office out and turned the building into a start-up location. I lost my
PO Box and now I have to deliver my mail at a tobacco shop.
One of the local mail pickup places even made the news before
Christmas: DHL Parcel Post drivers frequently deliver lots of packages
to this shop. People would have to wait in line for over an hour, only
to be turned down and to learn that the guys who run the shop would
require at least three days to sort through their packages. On
Saturdays, they are closing at 4 pm. At 4 pm sharp, they kicked
everybody out of the shop and threatened to call the police if people
should refuse to leave.
If you think that your local post office is bad now, wait and see what
happens when The Donald gets his way...

If Igo Global Shipping International Express, you can ship with up
to $2500 insurance, but the cost is astronomical......I spoke with my
post office rep and they said they had changed all the rules within
the past six months due to
the enormous amount of losses they had incurred...some countries they
won't even insure at all….so, I assume if one wants to ship a poster
with insurance above $2500 you need to have insurance on your own.
My postal rep suggested UPick insurance so I am going to look into
that. As Bruce said, international shipping costs have almost
doubled in the past five years...……….it's amazing.

As some of you know, I wrote a recently released book called "Star
Wars Memories: My Time in the (Death Star) Trenches). It's about the
years I worked on the marketing of/Star Wars/and/The Empire Strikes
Back/.
I have two international requests for copies of my book. They could,
of course, just order from Amazon in their home countries but they
want signed copies so they have to get them from me.
Case 1) A guy in Australia (and possibly a couple of his friends)
want signed copies. I went to the Post Office and the cheapest rate
they quoted me -- the clerk admitted she didn't really know how to
look this up -- was $24 to ship a 2.1 pound envelope. That would be
one copy of the book. Media Mail apparently can't be used overseas.
Case 2) A Star Wars convention in Norway wants to buy 30 (!) copies,
some personalized and some just signed. They'd like to bring me in as
a guest (in which case they could buy from Amazon locally and I'd
sign on site) but I don't know if my wife, Genny, whose still
recovering after two and a half months in the hospital from a
nerve-destroying ailment, will be well enough by March for me to
travel like that. Thirty copies of my book, which is large and
fairly heavy, would require two boxes weighing about 32 pounds each.
I'm getting quotes for shipping from USPS, UPS, and FedEx ranging
from $500 to $1100.
$24 for one copy or $1100 for two boxes of copies is nuts. There
must be some cheaper way to ship books overseas.
What am I missing?
