That sounds logical but it does beg the question what does "acquired legally 
mean"? eg if you purchased a poster from a person who worked for the 
distributor and it is likely that he/she did not have permission to "acquire" 
the poster before selling it to you.

In the US, resale of movie posters (and any other copyrighted materials like 
CDs or books) is protected by the first-sale doctrine. If you have aquired a 
movie poster legally, you can do with it whatever you want: Give it away, sell 
it, destroy it, whatever you pleaseß. So unless a previous owner can prove that 
a poster has been stolen from him, we‘re all in the clear here.

The first-sale doctrine DOES NOT grant the right to reproduce copyrighted 
materials.
