I believe horror works by also taking that which we know and that which is normal and exaggerating it by size (jaws - tarantula - them), darkness or malevolence. Norman Bates was a human just like you and me - until he wasn’t - and therein lies the horror. The darkness that is common to us all that must be faced. "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the Autumn moon is bright.” The killer shark swims the water of our primitive subconscious. Horror films are the fairy tales we tell ourselves that help us face the dark reality within us all.
