Yes, provenance is the most important thing with signed posters and
many of the signed movie posters that turn up for sale only have a
CofA which usually doesn’t prove that it was signed.

Over the years, I have had a lot of low value posters signed at The
Hollywood Show and nearly always get a photo of the actor actually
signing the poster. In my opinion, that’s the best form of provenance.
However, I would never get a valuable poster signed.

Subject: Re: [MOPO] New Autographs on vintage Posters?

The biggest problem with autographs is having the provenance to prove
it's an actual autograph many collectors will take a picture of the
actor or talent signing the item as they're doing it one collector who
is collection I bought had green hornet mask signed by Van Williams
and he had photos of him signing it at the convention that's bona fide
proof that it's original the Groucho Marx autograph would be great
because he's one of the most historic figures from motion pictures and
entertainment however verification of proof canals only be
authenticated by autograph specialist and there is always room for
error use to be a book with the facsimiles of autographs they might
have something better nowadays with digital technology the
Christiansen's card book was actual samples of autographs also there
used to be a magazine called autograph collector that listed many
dealers in autographs across the US ther was a flurry of signed cast
posters inthe 80s and90s my friend wanted untouchables andi told him
it was a preprint from Germany as i sold them ,,he didnt care itwas
his fave film so he paid 100.00 total fake but some people are so
caught up inthe moment they buy forgerys and some dealers will even
offer them some even print up certificates of authenticity. justas
many dealers sell bootlegs of desired posters scammers are in all
collectibles./.. you need to be careful buyers beware!!!!

Paul and Alan both make excellent points. I have wondered about this,
as well, as I have two posters that are signed. One is a lobby signed
by Groucho Marx, which I believe is an exception. The other is a
one-sheet for Midnight Run that Alan Parker signed for me back in the
early 1980s. His signature is discreet and not visually obtrusive in
any way. It’s a flat signature so no personalization worries. Does it
increase the value? My sense is that it does not but I don’t really
know. I think the realm of truly price-altering signatures is probably
very small.

Hi group I know we’ve knocked this around in the past..I think it
depends on whose autographing ..my example you want a bogart
signature on an orig Casablanca poster?..I don’t think he signed much
so I think that would be cool..however as to the value of the poster
hard to say if it would increase decrease or do nothing..but if it’s
a personalized sig ..to Alan best of luck HB still cool but no q
decreases value of poster

I was wondering what you guys think about newer autographs on
vintage movie posters?

Personally, I like vintage autographs. I have a Subway Window Card
for THE WARRIORS that was signed by almost the entire cast back in
1979. Since the movie is a personal favorite, I really like that
one.

If I had the choice between an unsigned poster and one signed by the
cast in the last few years, I would definitely go for the unsigned
one.

Today, I circled around buying an expensive CLOCKWORK ORANGE poster,
which turned out be signed by Malcolm McDowell. When you take a look
on ebay, you find tons of MM signatures on stills, posters, lobby
cards, toy boxes, hats, masks, and what not. When I mentioned to the
seller that this guy apparently signs everything you hold in front
of him, he was totally offended and ended our conversation.

My point being: An original 1973 Bob Dylan autograph on a PAT
GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID Onesheet might raise the value of this
very affordable poster to a completely different level.

On the other hand, in my personal perception, a more or less recent
McDowell signature on a rare and expensive CLOCKWORK ORANGE poster
would much rather lower the value than enhance it. Again, this is
merely my personal opinion.

What do you think on this matter?
