For what it's worth... A friend once asked me to take his absolute gem mint
1941 Joe DiMaggio Playball card to a card show and have Joe Di sign it. At
the show a well respected dealer told me it would be a huge mistake to get
that card signed. Would be better to get a lesser grade card signed to give
it better value. I called my friend and told him what he said. I didn't get
it signed. Obviously this was many years ago.
