Requiring a sign-in for condiition information on an open lot is something else entirely. My guess is they are simply too lazy to write a condition report and only do so upon request.
Like most of the major auction houses and even with Heritage, there's been a whole new regime of people working there. Previously, when doing poster auctions exclusively, Sotheby's always had a grading system with each item given a grade. They probably didn't do that since this isn't an auction with just posters. Besides, these people are not poster experts. But as I just mentioned in my previous MoPo post, for my material, just ask the best source possible and that's me and I'd be happy to provide one for you. My past experiences with both Christies and Sotheby were usually dominated by brutal overgrading, abysmal customer service, lost lots (don't expect as much as an apology from these guys!) and ridiculous shipping costs. I've seen similar issues with EVERY auction house and not just Christies and Sotheby's but it's also not the usual case. With my material at my single owner sale years ago at Sotheby's and with material I consigned to them for several years afterwards, I did the grading, and it was accurate. If anything, it was graded lower than it actually was. And as far as ridiculous shipping costs are concerned, I did have one when I bought something from Propstore and Greg Douglas just had one with Hake's but sometimes if you contact them as Greg did with Hake's and I did with Propstore, you can sometimes work something out, very reasonably and easily. As far as the current auction with Sotheby's, even if it's not my material, I would be happy to pick up a winning item for someone and ship it to them for the actual cost. Tommy, everybody requires sign-in for post-auction details. Requiring a sign-in for condiition information on an open lot is something else entirely. My guess is they are simply too lazy to write a condition report and only do so upon request. My past experiences with both Christies and Sotheby were usually dominated by brutal overgrading, abysmal customer service, lost lots (don't expect as much as an apology from these guys!) and ridiculous shipping costs. It was fine when I was still traveling, could inspect the lots in person in their preview and pay up and collect my wins after the auction. I looked over the lots out of curiosity, but I have no intention of bidding in this auction or any of their other sales. Helmut Gesendet: Sonntag, 30.
